How to Find a Life - Matthew 10:32-39

Jesus tells his disciples that they will be "acknowledged" before the Father if they "acknowledge" Jesus. He then goes on to explain what all this acknowledging entails. I find it interesting that he didn't say, "Just pray, and ask me to come into your heart." The type of "acknowledgement" Jesus has in mind is a little different. He explains this means nothing else competes for primacy, or first place, in your life - not your mom, dad, friend, brother, sister or even your child. As a matter of fact, if you don't lay your own life down (die to yourself), you're not worthy of following Jesus. Acknowledging Jesus means you forsake everything for him.

Sometimes this is where we leave the explanation and we make it sound like following Jesus must be a real drag. Don't miss the last section. No one is to love anything more than Jesus. He should be an all consuming passion in our lives. In fact, the only real life to be had is found in Him.

Matthew 10:32-39
32"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.

34"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
'a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law
36a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'[e]

37"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Get in the Story - 3 John

How would you like to be Diotrephes? You might be thinking, "Who is Diotrephes? I've never heard of him." You're about to. The only time he's mentioned is in this letter from John to Gaius. John describes him as someone who, "loves to be first." Here you have a man who has an opportunity to get into the story of what Jesus Christ is doing in the world, but he can't look outside of himself.

Christianity requires a humble heart. You cannot follow Christ with your pride in tact. It requires that you lay yourself down, esteem others as better than yourself, look to the interest of others and not your own. But above all, it means you give up your life and yield to the will of our Lord. The man who "loves to be first," as John puts it will always miss out on a true life that is imbedded into the magnificent story of Jesus Christ.

3 John
1The elder,
To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. 3It gave me great joy to have some brothers come and tell about your faithfulness to the truth and how you continue to walk in the truth. 4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

5Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, even though they are strangers to you. 6They have told the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. 7It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans. 8We ought therefore to show hospitality to such men so that we may work together for the truth.

9I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us. 10So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us. Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.

11Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. 12Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.

13I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink. 14I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

Peace to you. The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.

I Want the Truth! - 2 John

What a strong reassurance John gives this church in his letter. They know the truth! We will be attacked more than once in this life with ideologies and philosophies that claim to have a corner on the truth market. Many of them will claim that they know the truth and some will say that the truth is, there is no truth at all.

John says the truth is not something you just know, but you experience it. You walk in it, live it, breathe it. For those of us that are in Christ we have found truth. Do not move away from it. Instead, rest in it and lead other to real truth that is found in Jesus Christ.

2 John
1The elder,
To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth - 2because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:
3Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, will be with us in truth and love.

4It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

7Many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. 9Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. 11Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work.

12I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
13The children of your chosen sister send their greetings.

We Will Overcome! 1 John 4:1-12

There were some people coming up with some pretty ridiculous ideas about Christianity back in the first century. John was responding to these men who were saying they knew God in a special way through the spirit. This led them to believe that the person Jesus was not really God, which means Jesus didn't really die for the sins of mankind.

This is basically the same problem with every cult that arises even today. They will always downplay the significance of Jesus Christ. John calls these types the antichrists, meaning they're against Christ. This is how we can test what these groups say has been revealed to them: do they point toward Jesus Christ (fully God and fully man) as the one who died for the sins of man? If so, then that spirit is of God. If not, count it as evil and shun it. Let us hold fast to the truth of the gospel, not being swayed by new "truths" that downplay the significance of the cross.

1 John 4:1-12
1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

4You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit[a] of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

7Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son[b] into the world that we might live through him. 10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for[c] our sins. 11Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

Love Is All We Need - 1 John 3:11-24

There was a problem in the church around the time John wrote this letter. Some people had started teaching some things about Jesus and Christianity that were inaccurate. John combats the false teacher by taking his hearers back to the beginning, reminding them of what the true message is. The message is one of love.

If we receive a message about Jesus that leads us away from loving one another we should discard that teaching. God is love and without Him there is no love. Every commandment points to loving God and loving people. If we don't love one another then the love of Christ is not in us.

1 John 3:11-24
11This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. 13Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

21Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. 23And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Why Obedience is Better than Performance - 1 John 2:1-14

Over and over again God tells His people He wants our hearts and not our things (Isaiah 1 is a great example). The apostle John reiterates that point here. The one who loves the Lord follows the Lord - obeys Him.

Sometimes we get to feeling guilty about not being the type of Christian we think we should be, but instead of having a repentant heart we try to give God something to make ourselves feel better. We say something like, "I'll start going to church more often, I'll give some money to charity" or "I'll read my Bible everyday." We must recognize that Christianity is not about performing, it's about following. The one who follows Jesus knows Jesus.

1 John 2:1-14
1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for[a] the sins of the whole world.

3We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But if anyone obeys his word, God's love[b] is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

7Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

9Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. 10Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him[c] to make him stumble. 11But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.
12I write to you, dear children,
because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13I write to you, fathers,
because you have known him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, dear children,
because you have known the Father.
14I write to you, fathers,
because you have known him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God lives in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.

Not Too Old For Discipline - Hebrews 12:1-13

Sometimes we have a tendency to view ourselves as autonomous or self-governing. We're old enough to make our own decisions and no one is going to tell us what to do. However, for those of us who are in Christ, this kind of thinking will not fly. Not only is it inconsistent with the commitment we've made to Him, He won't let it happen.

God disciplines those He loves. This passage makes that clear. Isn't that reassuring? If you find yourself being punished by God, rejoice. That means you're one of His kids and he loves you. When we were kids, my dad would always tell us he loved us after he spanked us. At the time I'm sure I thought, "Well that's a funny way of showing it." Looking back I understand (and even then I think) that the discipline was for my own good. It kept me from careening down a path of disobedience. Aren't you thankful our heavenly Father does the same for us.

Hebrews 12:1-13
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."[a]

7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13"Make level paths for your feet,"[b] so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

Worth Holding On To - Hebrews 3:1-14

The author is writing to Hebrews, hence the name "Hebrews". Because of his intended audience he appeals to their knowledge of their scriptures, the Old Testament. He also gives convincing evidence throughout the book as to the deity and greatness of Jesus as the Christ. The One who is above all men, angels and authority. Jesus is in fact the exact representation of God.

The text below explains how much greater Jesus was than Moses, a Jewish hero. While Moses was a servant, Jesus is the Son. We should then remain in Christ. Don't lose heart in your pursuit of the Lord, and certainly don't turn your hearts away from God, like the Jews did in the desert. May we always hold firmly to Christ in full recognition of the superior value found in knowing him rather than in knowing anything else this world may offer. And rejoice because He holds on to you!

Hebrews 3:1-14

1Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. 2He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. 3Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

7So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, 8do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, 9where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. 10That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' 11So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.' "[a]

12See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. 14We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first.

Walking Dead - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

As I sat through a funeral today I was reminded of the hope we have in Christ. So often that hope becomes distant and our daily lives take front an center. The Lord breathed life into me during that funeral as he impressed upon me the need to live a real life on this earth; a life that is full. As those who are in Christ Jesus, let us live in the hope of what he has called us to. May we never walk around like living dead; functioning but not thriving. We were called to more than six hours of school a day or eight hours of work. We are called to be passionate followers of Christ, that we might be able to say with Paul, "To live is Christ and to die is gain!"

13Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep (we might use the term "pass away"), or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. 14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words.

What Are You Willing To Risk? Daniel 6:10-28

The post about Jesus praying reminded me of the story about Daniel and the lions' den. This is a story that is familiar to many. We think about this story and think it's a story about Daniel being saved from lions, which it is. However, it is first a story about prayer. Here's a little background. King Darius had just taken over the Babylonian kingdom and was about to make some changes in the administration. Daniel, who was a Jew and initially a slave, had worked his way up to the top of the administration. He was about to be appointed as one of the top three governors in the entire kingdom. This didn't make the other administrators happy so they devised a plan to get Daniel killed. They convinced the king to issue a decree stating that no one could pray to anyone except the king for one month. They knew this would trap Daniel because they knew Daniel was a man who continually prayed to his God. The story picks up where Daniel has just found out about the decree.

10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: "Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or man except to you, O king, would be thrown into the lions' den?"
The king answered, "The decree stands—in accordance with the laws of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed."
13 Then they said to the king, "Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day." 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.
15 Then the men went as a group to the king and said to him, "Remember, O king, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed."
16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions' den. The king said to Daniel, "May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!"
17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel's situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.
19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions' den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?"
21 Daniel answered, "O king, live forever! 22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king."
23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
24 At the king's command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions' den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.
25 Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations and men of every language throughout the land: "May you prosper greatly!"
26 "I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end. 27 He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions!"
28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus [a] the Persian.

Rain, Sleet and Snow..

are to blame for keeping us apart this past week. That's right, due to the weather (and our parking lot functioning as a ice skating rink) we will be cancelling church tonight. That sounds bad...we will not be meeting together tonight. Hopefully we'll be in better shape on Sunday. If it's still bad, we may just have to figure something out. I'm starting to have withdrawals.

Grace and peace,

Jacob

Pray! - John 17

This post is a little longer than the others, but there's really just no good place to cut this chapter off. It's one of those passages that says to the Christian, "Just in case you weren't sure praying was important, here's your Lord praying for Himself, the disciples and all disciples (followers) to come." One of the reasons I love this prayer is because Jesus prays for us! I know that's a little self-centered, but you have to admit it's pretty encouraging to have documentation of the Creator of the universe, the Lord Himself, praying for us.

John 17
Jesus Prays for Himself
1After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples 6"I have revealed you[a] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. 13"I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify[b] them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
Jesus Prays for All Believers 20"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: 23I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. 25"Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."

Shine the Light, Hide the Word - Psalm 119: 1-16

It's so difficult in this day to remain pure. If we are not extremely intentional about pursuing righteousness, we tend to careen into impurity. We must, as followers of Christ, keep our lives pure. If you're reading this and thinking, "too late," I want you to recognize that as an attack. Forgiveness is yours in Christ! What a wonderful truth. You can read all about it in his word. Consequently, that's also where you'll find refuge from the litany of offenses the world offers in order to undermine your faith. Pursue the Lord and stand by his Word.

Psalm 119

1 [a] Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD.
2 Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.
3 They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways.
4 You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed.
5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!
6 Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.
7 I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws.
8 I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me.

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
12 Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees.
13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.
14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.
15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.
16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad! 2 Timothy 2:14-26

Very rarely is an argument worth having. There's no harm in a good discussion that can sharpen both the ones doing the discussing and the hearers, but when the discussion elevates to an argument step back. Pride can do terrible things to us including getting us involved in arguments simply because we want to be right. In the end, even when we win, we lose because arguments divide, but a kind word unites.

14Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 19Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his,"[a] and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness."
20In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. 21If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
22Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

What Will You Do With Your Mina? Luke 19:11-27

When I was in grade school I got used to hearing the same talk from my parents about every nine-weeks. After looking at my report card they would come to me and say, "We just know you can do better." I'm thankful they weren't as harsh as the master in this story. Bs and Cs were fine for some kids, but not me...I could do better with what I had been given.

Jesus isn't giving a money management talk here. He's making a point that we have been entrusted with resources from our Master. Whether it's intellect, athleticism, creativity or resources, our Master wants us to use them well. There should be a return on His investment in us. Hiding what God has given us to use for his glory is nothing short of criminal.

The Parable of the Ten Minas
11While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. 12He said: "A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas.[a]'Put this money to work,' he said, 'until I come back.'
14"But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, 'We don't want this man to be our king.'
15"He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.
16"The first one came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned ten more.'
17" 'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.'
18"The second came and said, 'Sir, your mina has earned five more.'
19"His master answered, 'You take charge of five cities.'
20"Then another servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.'
22"His master replied, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23Why then didn't you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?'
24"Then he said to those standing by, 'Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.'
25" 'Sir,' they said, 'he already has ten!'
26"He replied, 'I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away. 27But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me."

Can A Rich Man Follow Christ? Luke 18:18-30

Jesus has a way of looking straight through to our hearts and exposing us for who we are. In the passage below, notice how Jesus pinpoints the very thing that is going to keep this man from following Jesus. As you read this ask God if there is anything in your life that is keeping you from truly following Him. What wasted life it would be to forsake the treasure of Jesus Christ for cheap fleeting pleasures this world can offer.

Rich Ruler
18A certain ruler asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
19"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone. 20You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'"
21"All these I have kept since I was a boy," he said.
22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
23When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. 24Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
26Those who heard this asked, "Who then can be saved?"
27Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."
28Peter said to him, "We have left all we had to follow you!"
29"I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life."

He Is Near Us!

What a great honor and privalege it is to be able to come before God every day. What a waste when we fail to do that. Can you imagine missing an opportunity to meet with the Creator of the world, the King over all kings? Let us join with David in this psalm of praise to our Lord. May his words be your words today, for the Lord our God watches over us and is near to us!

Psalm 145
A psalm of praise. Of David.
1 I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.
4 One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.
5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds.
7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.
9 The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.
10 All you have made will praise you, O LORD; your saints will extol you.
11 They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might,
12 so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.
14 The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time.
16 You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.
17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made.
18 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.
20 The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak in praise of the LORD. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

Daily Study - January 10 - Ephesians 6:10-20

It's so easy to get a day off to a slow start. What a benefit it would be to wake up every day with this word from the Lord pulsing through our minds. "Get up", it would tell us. "It's time to fight!" Preparation is key in doing anything well...that includes life. Arm yourselves, prepare yourselves, and pray. Pray all the time, for all the saints, that we would all boldly make known the mystery of the gospel.

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.

12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel,

20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
